This is a physiologic instrument for measuring muscle strength under dynamic conditions. With this technique of measuring muscle strength we can estimate the power, performance and endurance of different muscle groups at circular motion in various joints with a certain and a selected speed of motion.
Isometric testing can be usefully and safely used in assessing the progress of rehabilitation after orthopedic and trauma surgery on joints and bones, after conservative treatments of injuries of soft tissues (egg muscle raptures, longer immobilization) as well as in monitoring the impact of training muscular strength and endurance. An extremely important element obtained by isokinetic testing, is the comparison of agonist and antagonist muscles, as the proper balance of power among them is the key for injury prevention as well as for efficient and safe movement in sport disciplines, in which are usual rapid changes of direction of movement or deceleration or acceleration during the game.
Usefulness of isokinetic dynamometry is not limited only for testing. Because of the possibility of adapting the resistance according to the muscular force produced, the device is very useful for training throughout the course of rehabilitation. Particularly in the early period after injury, practice with this device is much more secure, since the precise control of muscle tonus reduces the risk of lesion recurrence or new lesions. In the later stages of rehabilitation, it helps us discover the power imbalance between individual muscle groups, which is important for planning and directing the training and later sports activity. Similarly, the isokinetic dynamometry was also proved to be useful in prevention of sports injuries, as periodic tests. In this way we can detect and measure the destroyed correlations in the activation of different muscle groups, even before the development of their injuries. With appropriate preventive exercise program, we can thereupon also remove the imbalance even before the injury develops.
